As summer winds down, we know back-to-school season can come with a mix of emotions—especially if you’re parenting a child with a congenital melanocytic nevus (CMN). From first-time classroom jitters to navigating conversations with peers and educators, there’s a lot to think about. But you don’t have to do it alone.

Start the School Year Strong: Quick Tips for Families

Connect early with school staff. Schedule a meeting with teachers and school administrators before the first day. Share your child’s Nevus Owner Student Letter or a personalized CMN Awareness Card to help them understand your child’s needs and story.

Practice school routines. Ease back into school schedules by adjusting bedtimes, practicing morning routines, and doing a couple “dry runs” before the big day.

Help your child self-advocate. For older kids, practice simple ways to explain their CMN to others in their own words. Confidence starts with being prepared.

Celebrate your child’s strengths. Back-to-school season is a great time to remind your child—and their educators—that they are more than their skin. Highlight their talents, interests, and what makes them unique.
