What can be done?

As of 2007, the best method for removing large nevi is surgical excision by a skilled plastic surgeon. Adjacent skin is stretched using a technique called "tissue expansion," then the nevus is cut out and the expanded skin is used to cover the area where the nevus was removed. The result depends on the skill of the surgeon and the location of the nevus.

There is a lot of talk in the news about cultured skin, laser, chemical peels, and other "cutting edge" ideas. So far these have proven inadequate in most cases of large nevi. Many people with large nevi live long lives without any attempt at removal.

Nevus Outreach is engaged in scientific research seeking a cure. In 2007 Nevus Outreach hopes to fund a 3-year research project which will result in a way to remove nevus cells permanently from human tissue. If funded fully, this project will result in human testing in 2009.
