2016 Conference Speaker: Sven Krengel

Sven Krengel is a speaker at the 2016 Nevus Conference

Dr. Krengel’s interest in large congenital melanocytic nevi began during his stay at the Children’s Hospital in Mexico City (1998) when he first met children with this condition. Dr. Ramon Ruiz-Maldonado and his colleague Lourdes Tamayo were formidable teachers in pediatric dermatology.

Back in Germany, Dr. Krengel focused on experimental and clinical research on pigmentary cell function and pigmentary disorders. In 2005, he initiated, to become Nävus-Netzwerk Deutschland, because at that time, nevus patients and parents from German-speaking countries were not yet organized.

Dr. Krengel cites the Nevus Outreach conferences as highlights in his career. In 2011, with the help of Nevus Outreach, Dr. Krengel funded and organized the International Expert Meeting on Large Congenital Melanocytic Nevi and Neurocutaneous Melanocytosis in Tübingen, Germany.

This year, in collaboration with Dr. Ashfaq Marghoob, Dr. Krengel established a new consensus classification for congenital melanocytic nevi (Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, manuscript in revision). “The combined efforts of interdisciplinary scientists and patient organizations will help establishing an international platform for CMN research and further international collaborations.”
