From Where I Sit

Shoveling Coal

Well now we are in the thick of it. Today we rode 63 miles. I am feeling pretty good, not sure Taylor can say the same. We are thankful to Chris Nulf, long-time friend of Nevus Outreach, and also good friend of Taylor and me, who is taking a week out of his life to be the guy who makes sure we land at the Start/Finish line every morning fed, watered, rested, with working equipment and, well, combed hair.

We are also thankful to our myriad of supporters. Seeing the support continue to climb is helping us keep focused on the task at hand. Thank you for that. Those of you who have not yet chosen (or “gotten around to it,” you know who you are), to support this grand adventure, remember that each $1 you pitch in is being matched by another $2 – each dollar is worth three! – and this deal is good up until we raise $13,000 new dollars – so we are about 60% of the way at the moment.

If you have a sadistic bent, you can make Taylor and me shave our legs and look like those racing cyclists if we raise an additional $11,000 to bring the overall total to $50,000 – Rita Pink has the details, and is in charge of Quality Control. She is currently discussing waxing with Michelle from Australia, and, well, I would say that won’t be pretty, but we’ll do it for the good of the order if we must.

I have to go to bed now (written late Tuesday night) so I will leave you with this little video. Keep those cards and letters coming. You drive us onward. Thank you.

Twelve Days to Go

Well, the Oklahoma Freewheel event is not approaching any slower!  Today there are 12 days to go.

I am pleased that I rode what, in cycling parlance, is a “metric century” on Saturday – 100 kilometers.  Unfortunately I didn’t average 15 MPH which I would like to have, but I’ll chalk that up to all the st Read more...

Time to Get Serious

Today is the first day in a long time I don’t have imminent travel plans, so I can get focused on knocking out this Oklahoma Freewheel deal.

I don’t like to brag, well, too much, but you know, I have been riding for a long time, since we Read more...

Game-Changing Discovery of Gene Mutation

In 1998 I met Karen Ball.  Karen is the mom of Kaelin, born with a birthmark covering most of her face.  When Kaelin was born, her parents were frustrated by the lack of information available, and by how few doctors really understood her daughter’s rare disease.

I’ve talked about it before, but it bears repeating how I have learned that  Read more...
